In the heart of Florida is Sebring, known internationally for its Twelve Hours of Sebring car race. Here in the center of the Sunshine State, just 60 miles south of Disney World, you’ll find nearly 100 crystal clear lakes for fishing, boating, skiing and sailing; thousands of acres of citrus groves; and more than a dozen golf courses. The Citrus Golf Trail is a collection of golf courses that offer history, value, fantastic golf and the friendliest service anywhere. Our gently rolling hills, green landscapes and charming small towns make this a relaxing getaway and our central location provides easy access to Florida’s best attractions without the traffic and high prices of the tourist areas. It’s accessible by car, just 75 miles off I-75, and within two hours of five airports - Orlando, Fort Myers, Sarasota, Tampa and Palm Beach.
Golfers know the area as “The Value Golf Capitol of America” because rates are almost unbelieveable for the quality of play. Golf courses of note on the Citrus Golf Trail include the historic Pinecrest Golf Club, a traditional Donald Ross layout bordered only by beautiful orange groves and natural wooded areas. Located in Avon Park, Pinecrest lets you walk in the footsteps of many of the game’s greatest players, having been the location of the very first televised PGA golf tournament.
In the day of management companies and big corporations, River Greens Golf Course also in Avon Park is still a family-owned and operated business. It opened for play in 1969, just a few years
after its sister course of the same name was opened in West Lafayette, Ohio. River Green’s staff works year-round to offer top quality conditions. The course is great for all abilities with target golf and strategy coming into play and the finish is a long- hitters dream, with 3 par 5’s out of the last 4 holes.
Home to two championship courses, Deer Run and Turtle Run, Sun ‘N Lake is an absolute must visit on the Citrus Golf Trail. Playing recent host to the PGA Canadian Tour’s USA Qualifying Tournament, both courses boast great conditions. They have been voted #1 in playability and challenge year after year by locals and media alike.
The Sebring Municipal Golf Course rounds out the special courses on the Citrus Golf Trail. This 18 hole championship golf course was constructed in 1928 and is a true example of the old Florida golf course. Four sets of tees provide a fair test of each player’s abilities. While only 6,500 yards from the back tees, the small elevated greens make the course play much longer. The wide fairways are surrounded by manicured roughs. It’s also conveniently located across the street from the luxurious Inn on the Lakes, which offers great value golf packages with most of the courses in Highlands County and the Citrus Golf Trail. This hotel boasts the area’s best restaurant and lounge, first-class rooms and suites, an outdoor pool and sunrise and sunset views over two lakes, making for a perfect place to stay when you visit and play the Citrus Golf Trail
